that's the best time to work on the stats by reading books or watching movies or working jobs or eating giant burgers. Early in the game you don't meet enough people to have someone to spend time with all the time. Once you hit a roadblock with a confidant due to a skill, then concentrate on that skill. But to be honest I over did it and wished I had spent more time with confidants. I was maxed out by the end of the game but I didn't have many things come up that cared about them. Work on confidants over skills such as Knowledge. you need to maximize either elemental weaknesses or status technicals to survive the tougher encounters. All the tough combats are almost like puzzles. Learn as many weaknesses of enemies as you can. In Mementos, I skip all the weak enemies unless I'm looking for something specific or if I just wanted to grind. If you kill every enemy you see in the main dungeons at least once, you'll be good on xp.
